Why the draft?

The Bush Administrations policies on war have had severely detrimental effects on the US all volunteer (professional) military.

·          The current military was developed over 3 decades during times of relative peace.

·          Past conflicts which mobilized the military had the best training and equipment along with clear objectives and an exit strategy.

·          When reserves were activated they were given ample warning and were not called upon more than once every 5-6 years.

“Long, dangerous tours with an uncertain end-date are having an effect on all of our soldiers, but particularly on the guard and reserve.”

Sen. Hagel (R-NE) and Sen. Reed (D-RI) in a letter to colleagues.

To contrast this: Based on a poll done in Stars and Stripes (pentagon’s publication) of nearly 2000 military personal:

·          Approximately one-third said the war in Iraq was of little or no value and that their mission lacked clear definition.

·          40% said their goals had little or nothing to do with their training.

·          49% said they would not re-enlist .

·          Currently, Enlisted, Reserves, and National Guard are all serving extended terms and multiple back-to-back rotations.

If the Bush Administration and the Project for the New American Century are going to continue their policies of pre-emptive strikes fighting “multiple simultaneous theatre wars” they will need a significant fighting force. The policy of pre-emptive wars has created more terrorists than it has destroyed and does more to propagate the proliferation of terrorists rather than prevent their proliferation. With current attitudes of those enlisted, reservists, and National Guards, where will the Administration get enough soldiers to fight the increasing instability they are creating?
